The last time you paid your maintenance fee, did you actually go?
That's the question a woman I spoke with recently couldn't answer.
She'd owned a timeshare in Florida since 2011. Her fee that first year was around $700. This year it was $1,940, plus a $600 "special assessment" for a roof on a building she'd stayed in twice. Between her and her husband, they'd paid the resort more than $18,000 over fourteen years, and the last time they'd actually set foot on the property was 2019.
She wasn't calling because she wanted to sell. She'd already tried – eBay wouldn't take a listing for a dollar, and the resort's "resale program" wanted $2,500 up front and would take somewhere between eighteen months and forever. She was calling because her son had just asked her, as gently as he could, whether the timeshare was going to end up his problem when she and her husband passed away.
That was the moment she decided to stop sitting on it.
The first thing she did – before she spent a dollar – was request the free cancellation notice letter, fill in her details, and mail it Certified to the resort. That letter didn't cancel her contract on its own. What it did was formally put the resort on notice in writing, and it opened the door to a no-cost review with an independent specialist who could look at her specific situation.

On its own, it does not cancel your contract, and the resort will typically respond with a form letter from their retention department. What it does is put your position on the record, in writing, which is often a useful step if you decide to pursue the matter further.

A few things this doesn't require.
Being current on your maintenance fees. Some owners who reach out are two or three years behind. That doesn't disqualify you from requesting the letter or accepting a review. It just changes what the specialist looks at.
The original paperwork. Most owners don't have it – most owners couldn't find the contract they signed in the Orlando sales room fourteen years ago if their life depended on it. The specialist can work from what you remember about the purchase and the sales pitch.
Having paid off the mortgage on the timeshare. If you're still making mortgage payments on a week you haven't used since before the pandemic, that's a common situation the specialists deal with regularly.
Trying to sell it first, or trying again. You've been through that.
